Study Shows No Link of HIV Positive Dentist Patients
An HIV positive dentist who used an imperfect infection control techniques apparently did not transmit the virus to his patients, according to a new study by federal and Florida researchers.
It is possible that this particular case fell victim to the verdict from a similar case that happened earlier where one dentist did transmit HIV to his patients.
The new study by the federal centers for disease control and this state's health department used DNA sequencing to isolate the strain of HIV carried by the unidentified dentist.
It found no evidence that the dentist's HIV positive patients contracted their infections from him because their virus' DNA did not match his.
Some of the conclusions also supported the fact that one patient did not contract the virus from another infected patient and there was also nothing that supported claims made against unclean dental implements.
Studying the case even further allowed people to develop a better viewpoint. Virus transfers from dentists to their patients are low in risk and by it being low risk physicians should be free from mandatory health assessment exams.
Physicians were obligated to take mandatory health assessment tests after one of the six infected patients of the first dentist waged a crusade for such a ruling.
The other dentist had 30 years of experience most of which were spent helping indigenous people who were suffering from AIDS.
It only took three years for the dentist to succumb to the HIV he contracted.
As the last five years of his professional life came to a close 19% of his patients got tested for HIV and 24 tested positive for the virus.
In other ways four other patients found out of their HIV infections. All of those who tested positive for HIV were analyzed for potential behavioral problems and 24 out of the 28 were high risk.
When DNA sequencing was applied no evidence was found linking the strains of HIV from the dentist to his patients.
In no way could the dentist have transmitted his HIV to his patients as seen in the differences that existed in the strains of HIV taken from him and his patients.
But instead, we found that each of the infected patients and the dentist had distinct strains, suggesting that each was infected independently.
